The latest Southern Athletic League saw the Blue Star team travel the short distance to Guildford, where they faced a tough match competing against Hercules Wimbledon and Cambridge Harriers who were lying 1st and 2nd in the league table. Putting up an excellent performance the team ended up 2nd equal with Cambridge Harriers, scoring 224 points, behind winners Hercules Wimbledon, who scored a massive 323 points, but ahead of 4th placed Thanet (98 points). There was an excellent run in the Men’s 800m, where Ash Williams, ran a good tactical race to come a winner in 2m04.5s. In the same race Sam Richards finished in 2nd place in the B string in a time of 2m18.2s. Simon Brown although still recovering from an injury competed in both the Shot and the Discus. Having thrown 11.55m in the Shot, where he finished 2nd, he then won the Discus with an impressive throw of 36.74m. Dan Dearden cleared 3.60m to win the Pole Vault, while there was a good run from Bradley Burke in the 2000m Steeplechase, where he led all the way to come home in 6m35.3s, where team mate Josh Barnett also ran well to win the B race in 7m09.0s. |

The Long and Triple Jumps produced good points, with Rocky Betts jumping 5.69m in the Long Jump to claim second place in the A string and Tom Gilsenan-Best winning the B string with 5.62m. The Triple Jump saw Betts and Matt O’Dwyer team up, with Betts jumping11.06m in the A event for 3rd place and O’Dwyer leaping 11.05m to win the B event, both achieving personal bests. Luke Burgess and Ryan Bowyer claimed second places in the 5000m running 16m22.8s and 19m16.5s respectively, whilst another second place was secured by Jack Milnthorpe in the High Jump, where he was edged out of first place on countback, both athletes clearing 1.80m. In the Women’s events there was a double victory for Renee Bassin. Firstly she leapt 4.54m to win the Long Jump and then saw a clearance of 1.45m good enough to win the High Jump. Caroline Wirth won the Discus with a throw of 27.75m, with Sophie Sheldon taking second place in the B event (15.05m). Sheldon had earlier cleared 2.20m in the Pole Vault for another second placing. Jasmine Belshaw ran well in the 100m, running 13.8s for second place in the A race and then threw 23.33m to secure second place in the Javelin. Belshaw together with Bassin, Sheldon and Melanie Bradley teamed up in the 4 x 100m relay and came home easy winners in 55.0s. This result leaves the team in 7th position in the 17 Club league. |
