Coaching
The Club has a number of UK Athletics qualified Coaches able to deliver expert coaching in all events. Remember they are volunteers and give their time willingly to help the athletes.
Club Nights are Monday and Wednesday from 6.00 until 7.00pm for new under-13 members and 7.00 until 8.00 or 8.15pm for all other athletes. Other specialist training sessions may be arranged by agreement between the Coaches and their athletes. Athletes do not have to train on both nights although they will be encouraged to do so. More experienced athletes should expect to train more than 2 nights a week.
Coaching groups are arranged according to age, ability and experience. The younger athletes are started in the reception group and are coached in the whole range of events with an emphasis on 'fun'. As they gain experience so they may be moved to groups offering more specialised coaching.
You can expect your Coach to:
- operate safely
- be covered by insurance
- to be committed to their athletes
- to retain a sense of humour
- be presentable and punctual.
In return the Coach expects their athlete to:
- attend regularly
- accept
- advice
- be polite and responsive to instructions
- wear suitable kit
- behave sensibly
- compete when asked to do so
Athletes should inform the Coach of any injuries or previous sports sessions at school etc. so that sessions can be adjusted accordingly.
Martlets
Martlets is Fun Athletics for beginners age 8 - 12 at Broadbridge Heath on Thursday from 5.30 - 6.30pm, it runs during term time only and is payable termly in advance.
Contact for Martlets is Dave Ingram on 01903 539636.
Food & Drink
Always drink plenty before training and bring a drink with you. Avoid eating a heavy meal less than 2 hours before training or competition but have a snack available to top up your energy levels immediately after training.
Clothing
Athletes should be dressed in T-shirt, shorts and trainers with sufficient layers of warm outer clothing so that they are able to train outside in most weathers, (including hats and gloves if needed). Spikes are an advantage but are not essential, especially for younger athletes, only becoming necessary when competition is entered. Coaches are always willing to offer advice on suitable footwear.
Club vests are a requirement for most competitions. These and sweatshirts in club colours are available from Sue May at a cost of £14.00.
General Rules & Etiquette
- An athletics track can be a very busy and potentially dangerous place. It is essential that all athletes obey instructions of the Coaches and Officials.
- Only use those lanes that have been allocated to you by your Coach and do not use the inside lane for warming p.
- Look before crossing the track.
- If you hear a cry of 'TRACK' you are probably blocking someone's lane, look and move quickly to another, preferably outer, lane.
- Do not enter the roped off area in the middle of the track unless told to do so.This area is reserved for throws and is a dangerous area unless strict rules are enforced.
- Do not throw, jump, or hurdle unless supervised by a coach or coaching asssistant.
- Accidents and injuries must be reported to your Coach so that the appropriate treatment and reporting procedures can be followed.
