EIGHT MEDALS GAINED AT SUSSEX SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

At the recent Sussex Schools Championships, held at K2 Crawley, Blue Star members secured 4 Gold medals, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals, with some of them putting themselves in with a chance of selection for the prestigious English Schools Championships.

Cleo Tomlinson, who won the English Schools Junior Girls Long Jump in 2018, stepped up an age group and performed well, leaping 5.42m to take the Intermediate Girls County title. The three other gold medallists all came in the Junior Girls events, where Alina Hillicks threw 23.75m to win the Discus, Emily Hutchinson took the High Jump event with a clearance of 1.51m and Anna Jamieson won the 100m in 13.58s.

The Intermediate Girls Javelin saw Peanut Meekings take the silver medal with a throw of 35.42m, and Alexia Johnson ran 29.77s in the Junior Girls 200m to also claim the silver medal, whilst bronze medals were gained by Sophie Morris, who had a good run in the Junior Girls 1500m, running 5m05.24s, and by Bradley Burke, who ran 6m36.18s in the Senior Boys 2000m Steeplechase.

The second round of the Sussex U13 league (West Division) matches saw the Blue Star team score 181 points to finish in second place behind host club Crawley. Madeleine Way won the 70m Hurdles in an impressive 11.9s and then ran 21.6s to easily win the 150m. Phoebe Penston teamed up with her in both these events and won the B string hurdles in 12.5s and then took second in the B race of 150m (22.9s), Kyla Ball won the Girls High Jump with a clearance of 1.35m and there was also a victory in the Boys High Jump where Theo Ramage cleared 1.40m. Ramage then went on to finish second in the Shot with a throw of 8.10m. Seth Bond finished second in both the Long jump (4.16m) and the 75m Hurdles (14.2s), while Harry Long threw 23.51m for second place in the Javelin. Maddie Wilders threw 12.92m to take second place in the Girls Discus, where team mate Megan Hulcoop won the B string with a throw of 11.22m. Ellen Pratt ran well to finish second in the Girls 75m A race in 11.1s, before going on to take second place in the Shot with 6.14m. Pratt teamed up with Way, Penston and Emma Harrison in the 4x100m relay where they ran 57.9s to finish second.

Three athletes have bene selected to compete at the English Schools. Cleo Tomlinson (Long Jump) and Peanut Meekings (Javelin) for Sussex and Dan Dearden (Pole Vault) for Surrey.
